7th WTA INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ART BIENNIAL: “DIVERSITY

The 7th WTA International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art took place during the month of October 2017 in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was expected to be the largest event of its class in Uruguay’s history.

In general, the 7th WTA Biennial did not have a required theme for the artworks but instead operated with the underlying concept of DIVERSITY, which established a double connotation, giving artists the freedom to approach contemporary textile creativity from diverse contexts and concepts.

On the other hand, not having a specific theme allowed participants to develop their artwork through a great variety of forms, techniques, and materials, although the venues for some of our Textile Art Salons delineated thematic aspects of the works.

The 7th WTA Biennial offered four Internationally Juried Salons and one Invited Artists Exhibition. The Invited Artists Exhibition was displayed at Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales (MNAV) and was curated by Alicia Haber, a renowned historian, critic, and art curator from Uruguay.

The participating artists in the exhibitions were selected by an International Jury of recognized trajectory:

The 7th WTA Biennial had the honor of having Spain as a guest country. Lectures and workshops took place during the Biennial event.

In 2017, the Organization celebrated 20 years of uninterrupted activity, for which it granted special recognition to the persons who, during this time, had selflessly collaborated in the WTA Biennials and various other events throughout the world.

The World Textile Art Organization–WTA was created in 1997 by Colombian textile artist Pilar Tobón, and its headquarters were in Miami, Florida, U.S.A. Six biennials had taken place to date: two in the United States, one in Venezuela, one in Costa Rica, one in Argentina, and one in Mexico. The Biennial goals were:

1) To strengthen, encourage, and promote artistic manifestations of contemporary textiles at local, national, and international levels.

2) To provide an experiential event—one of a kind in the Americas—bringing together creators and their artworks of textile art with the public at-large.

3) To create a sensitive audience toward this cultural and artistic manifestation.

4) To strengthen solidarity ties among artists from all over the world and the local public.

During the inaugurations of the SUBTE Exhibition Center (October 06) and the Teatro Solís (October 07), the judges in the room awarded the awards and mentions of honor for each of the 4 International Calls.
